Here in Southern California, Susana Labradors Specializes in breeding Black Labrador Puppies. We use the Strong Genes of the original Black Labrador, to keep the pigment in our future generations of Labrador Retrievers. As stated in the AKC, or LRC Description of a Labrador, the Nose, and Eye ring pigment is to be Black. You will notice in Long Lines of Yellow Labradors, The pigment may become washed out, or a Liver color. As breeders, we refer to this in the term “Dudley”. We breed the Black back to Chocolate, and Yellow Labradors to maintain the integrity of the proper Lab as described by the “Power that be”.
My first Lab, back in 1983 was a Big Block Head Black Labrador. His body type was described as English, or sometimes Canadian. He had so much pigment; he had a Black spot the size of a quarter on his tongue. It’s sad that I never bred him. He lived to be almost 14. He was a good friend. After my children were born, I looked for a good family dog. I found Romeo. Romeo’s bloodlines were from Rocheby, and Cranspires (both are incredible kennels in England). He was so easy to train, all we did was talk to him. And all of his puppies were trained quickly as well. Romeo lives on with his picture in the banner of our website.
